About AISGW
Founded in 1951, the Association of Independent Schools of Greater Washington (AISGW) provides support to independent schools in Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia. AISGW’s membership includes 84 non-profit schools. These schools – elementary, secondary, day and boarding, urban and rural – educate approximately 35,000 students and employ 8,200 staff. Their missions are as diverse as the communities they serve.
As an activist for the collective interests and concerns of it member schools, AISGW provides a venue for resource sharing, information exchange and professional development. In addition, at times the Association serves as an advocate for its members, supporting their independence, general welfare and reputation before local governments, agencies, legislative bodies, the media and the public. On issue’s affecting member schools’ vital interests, AISGW initiates and facilitates collective action with other associations and community groups toward common goals.
All AISGW member schools are governed by a lay Board of Trustees, are independent in their governance and finance, have a stated policy of nondiscrimination in admission and employment and are incorporated on a non-profit basis.
AISGW is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and the District of Columbia Council for American Private Education (DC/CAPE), the Center for Non-Profit Advancement, the Nonprofit Roundtable of Greater Washington, the American Society of Association Executives and BoardSource.
